Portion for Orphans Newsletter

He who has pity on the poor lends to the Lord and God will pay back what he
has given.
– Proverbs 19:17
The Portion for Orphans team has made it safely to Cuzco, Peru!!! Cuzco is south
of Lima, near Machu Picchu. There are 300,000 people here and we are at 10,500
ft, but acclimating quickly. : ) Spanish and Quechua are the main languages spoken
here. We are spending our time volunteering at an orphanage, getting involved
in the church that founded the orphanage, and studying Spanish.
The orphanage is called El Hogar Libertad (Freedom Home). It is a small
Christian orphanage that has provided care for around 25 children. There are
currently 16 children in the home, many have been adopted by foreigners. These
children have all kinds of backgrounds, the worst of them being a child who was
heard crying in a dumpster. He was in a trashbag, in a dumpster, being nibbled
on by a guinea pig. Yesterday, Florinda, the little 6 year old you see in the
picture, told a few friends in the park that I was her mom. They came to me to
confirm it. Can you imagine? Having to pretend that you do have a mother? Surely
she just wanted to feel like a normal little girl for a little while.

We spend our afternoons and early evenings with the children, helping them
with
homework, doing crafts, singing and playing games. As you´ll see in the
pics, last week we made lanyards, colored, did face painting and took the children
to an awesome park. Your donations have funded these activities as well as a
large load of milk, rice, canned fruit, sugar, and diapers that should last for
quite some time.
The home is Christian and the children LOVE for us to read Bible stories to them.
I read one the other day and they begged for me to continue until we completed
almost 6 stories!!! We are so excited to be able to minister to, among other
things, their spiritual needs and to teach them about God. They all have different
answers concerning how to get to heaven, but the pastor of the church that started
their home, Freedom Church, read and passed out hundreds of John 3:16 diagrams
yesterday at an awesome evangelism concert they organized. They were begging
for more but we ran out. Let me know if you would like to pay for more copies
to be made and sent to the church here. It´s about $75 for 1000. Thank
you all so much for praying with us, we hope these newsletters will show you
that God is responding to your prayers.
The team is good, in great spirits and enjoying the work as well as the culture
and experience. Please pray for God to bless our efforts as we minister here.
